Obituary

Johnnie Carroll Hamilton, age 89, of Russellville, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2019.  He was born July 31, 1930, in Bass, AR, to Leander William and Nerva Ann McCutchen Hamilton. 

He attended Arkansas Polytechnic College (Arkansas Tech University), where he worked his way through school, becoming employed in the college business office upon graduation in 1952.  He retired from the position of University Controller after 42 years.   

 He joined the Arkansas National Guard in 1947 and served in the 217th Engineer Battalion, 39th Infantry Division.  In 1983 he began serving in the US Army Reserve until his retirement in 1990, obtaining the rank of Colonel. 

Johnnie always loved country and bluegrass music.  He sang and played his guitar with many local musicians at various area venues, such as the Red Barn.  He was also a member of the Lost Mountain Bluegrass Band.  In addition to playing his guitar, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. 

He was a member of several organizations, including the Russellville Civil Service Commission, of which he was a charter member, the American Legion, and the Military Officers Association of America.  He was also a member and past President of the Russellville Lions Club.  Johnnie and his wife, Carolee, attended West Side Church of Christ for many years.

In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by his step-father, James Lee Dickey; two brothers, Oxford and James Hamilton; a sister, Edith McCutcheon; two step-brothers, Lowell and Flavil Dickey; and one step-sister, Francis McCutcheon. 

Johnnie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carolee Cable Hamilton; two daughters, Donna Davenport (Doug) of Bartlett, TN, and Carolyn Stewart (Garry) of Conway, AR; one sister, Elisabelle Greenhaw, of Harrison, AR; and one step-brother, Russell Dickey, of Wichita, KS; four grandchildren, Derek Davenport (Jennifer), Kinsey Stewart, Michael Stewart, and Davis Davenport (Jillian); four great-grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service which will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 2500 South Knoxville Avenue, Russellville, AR.  Pallbearers will be Garry and Michael Stewart, Doug, Derek, and Davis Davenport, and David Mouser.  Arrangements are under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service in Russellville, AR.
