Mrs. Bernice Davis

December 29, 1922 ~ September 21, 2017 (age 94)
One of the River Valley's most notable educators, Bernice Davis, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017. She was 94, and hailed as a natural storyteller of humorous anecdotes. Mrs. Davis taught for 38 years in six schools throughout the Russellville area, including three schools that are no longer in existence. Her teaching career began during World War II, with 3rd - 5th graders at Mars Hill Elementary School, located at the time on Crow Mountain. She found teaching to be immensely rewarding, and loved teaching first graders the most. Having been hired to teach without a college degree, Bernice enrolled at Ouachita Baptist University in June, 1944, the day of the Normandy Invasion. By 1947, she enrolled & completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Arkansas Tech University where she met her husband, Argle Davis. They were married on January 3, 1949, and remained best friends and partners in life for 51 cherished years. Before retiring in 1984, Bernice had also taught at Mountain Springs School (Norristown) on Skyline where the Russellville Fire Station #2 is now housed, Center Valley, Pottsville, London and in Johnson County.

Bernice was born December 29, 1922, in Pottsville, a daughter of Elisha and Minnie Ella Jones Owens. She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Russellville, and enjoyed reading and cooking, especially cooking for others who never failed to enjoy her meal creations.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Argle Lee Davis; and, a brother, George Owens. Bernice is survived by a sister-in-law Flora Owens; nephews, Steve Owens (Susan) of Russellville; Joe Terry Lee (Rita) of Fayetteville; George Davis (Donna) of Atkins; two nieces, Susan Lewis (Tony) of Russellville; and, Jeannie Ann Webber (Jay) of Maumelle; other great nieces and nephews; and, a special friend and caregiver, Delores Motley.

Burial will be next to her husband at Rest Haven Memorial Park by Humphrey Funeral Service. Memorials may be made to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Russellville, 1200 N.
