Donald Roy Sterling

August 18, 1928 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 89)
Donald Roy Sterling, 89, of London, AR, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Atkins Nursing Home in Atkins. Don, or Papa Don as referred to by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born August 18, 1928, in Reno County Kansas to Frank and Marie (Strawn) Sterling, the oldest of six children. He graduated Reno County Community High School in 1947, and Hutchinson Junior College in 1950. He served in the Army during the Korean War as a ship fitter from 1950 to 1952, then entered the Army Reserves through 1957.

Don worked as a mechanic and farmer for many years. He moved to western Kansas in 1962, where he continued to dedicate his life to dryland farming. He owned and operated a seed cleaner business for many years. In his early years, he enjoyed working with 4-H clubs and teaching young people about farm life. He also shared his love of animals with his children and 4-H students. His dogs were part of his family and treated special.

Don retired in 1998, and moved to London, Arkansas, to be around his children and grandchildren. Oh, how he loved his grandchildren! They even asked him to go to church with them. He became a faithful attender of First Baptist Church of London and a true believer in Jesus Christ. He continued his love for farming on a somewhat smaller scale in his big vegetable garden. Many people were blessed with his bountiful crops. God loves the farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Sterling, and two sisters, Norma Jean Scott and Joyce Elliott. He is survived by three daughters, Lori Melton (Ronnie) of London; Debbie Woodbridge (Ricke) of Ardmore, OK; and Danita Pearson of Russellville; a son, Donnie Sterling (Jacque) of London; a brother, Ernie Sterling of Pretty Prairie, KS; a sister, Janice Jenson (Rick) of Hutchinson, KS; five grandchildren, Derek Melton (Keena) of London; Calder Melton (Allison) of Knoxville; Cade Pearson (Molly) of Stillwater, OK; Logan Pearson of Russellville; and Jay Hendrich of Austin, TX; and, five great grandchildren, Keegan Melton, Harper Melton, Emree Melton, Addy Pearson and Layla Pearson; and many nephews and nieces.
