Gordon W. Dunn, 74, of Russellville, passed peacefully and surrounded by his loving family Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home in Russellville.
The son of John and Dorothy Grace (Gordon) Dunn, he was born December 4, 1943 in Eugene, OR. Growing up in Mapleton, Oregon, and known to his friends, as "Gordy", he played basketball and baseball at the Mapleton High School, where his father served as school principal.
Gordon served his country in the United States Air Force during the war in Vietnam, as part of the base Military Police with the 7310th Air Wing, at Rhine-Main Air Base in Rhine-Main, Germany. His detail duties included guarding Air Force One and he played baseball with the Air Force Base traveling team, as a pitcher.
Following his military service, he married his best friend and the love of his life, Barbara McCoy, on March 10, 1967 in Florence, OR. They moved to Russellville where Gordon attended Arkansas Tech University and made many life-long friends while playing on a community basketball team for several years.
Gordon worked for 25 years in the security department at Arkansas Nuclear One and Two, retiring in 2010. Following the 911 Terror attacks in New York and Washington, DC, and as an acting Security Chief, he was instrumental in the implementation of many upgrades and changes in the security protocols at the plant.
He was a member of the West Side Church of Christ and the Russellville Country Club. He loved spending time with family, and after his retirement he enjoyed traveling and his twice a week golf game with his buddies from his church and was a member of the Russellville Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Jean Blalock.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Dunn of Russellville, two daughters, Dawn Whiting (John) of Hattieville, Tiffaney Drinkwitz (Jeremy) of Joplin, MO; five grandchildren, Lacey Hines (Morgan) of Russellville, Logan Gilbert (Sarah) of Hattieville, Ethyn Whiting of Hattieville, Jackson and Kate Drinkwitz of Joplin, MO; two great-grandchildren, Brinley Gilbert and Abram Hines, and are expecting the arrival of Uriah Willeston Hines; sister, Jo Anne Surcamp (Eldon) of Eugene, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Humphrey Chapel, after which the family will receive friends. Brother Tim Tripp will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers are Rex Chambers, Monty Coffman, Bill Davis, Bill Grant, Bill Hancock, Larry Harrell, John Lee, Bert Page, Jr., Clay Reed, and B. J. Thomas.
