John Ernest Salmans

September 22, 1931 ~ November 23, 2017 (age 86)
John Ernest Salmans, 86, of Russellville, died Thursday, November 23, 2017, at his residence, having moved here from California in 2011. A son of John Salmans, Sr., and Marcia Salmans, he was born September 22, 1931, in Oneill, Nebraska. He married Ivana Irene Salmans, on October 29, 1988, recently celebrating 29 years together. Before his retirement, he was a letter carrier for 36 years on the same route with the United States Postal Service in Merced, California.

John was very active and involved in many things that brought him much joy in life. He was a Boy Scout leader, a gold-card member of the American Legion of Merced, California for 62 years; Sons of the American Legion (SAL) of Norfolk, Nebraska; and served on the Board of Directors for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). One of the things that brought John much fulfillment in life was volunteerism. He and Ivana received the Volunteers of the Year Award from the Norfolk Veterans Home in Nebraska, and they both worked closely with Stephanie's Miracle In Loving Equine (SMILE), an organization that specializes in horseback therapy for handicapped children. John was an accomplished gardener with flowers, and raced pigeons as one of his hobby interests.

John was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and his late wife, Virginia Salmans, along with numerous other relatives. He is survived by his wife, Ivana of Russellville; a son, John C. Salmans of Merced, CA; a daughter, Linda Ince, of Merced; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Kalik and Samantha McDonald, both of Oregon; a step-son, Charlie Brown, of California; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM, on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Humphrey Funeral Service Chapel. Robert Brian Brock, Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church of Russellville will officiate. Mr. Salmans will be cremated.
