Mrs. Sydna Ruth Barton

July 26, 1927 ~ December 13, 2016 (age 89)
Sydna Young Barton, 89, a resident of Russellville, died on December 13, 2016, at Stella Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Russellville.

She was born on July 26, 1927, in the Gravel Hill Community, near Dover, to Robert Alva and Orra Myers Young. Sydna was the youngest of seven children, of which, only four children lived to adulthood.

After graduation from Dover High School and attending Arkansas Tech, she taught at Dover and Haynes, Arkansas. Sydna married O. Jack Smith from Van Buren, in 1947, and the couple had three children and lived in the Van Buren and Fort Smith area for many years.

Sydna taught Home Economics at Mulberry High School during the 1960-1961 school year. Then her husband died in 1965, and she moved her family to Dover and reenrolled in Arkansas Tech to renew her teaching certificate, eventually earning her Master's degree from UCA.
In 1968, Sydna became a member of the Sequoyah Elementary School Faculty, teaching special services education for over twenty years. She was active in REA/AEA/NEA.

On February 6, 1990, Sydna married Arvil "Bart" Barton, her former childhood sweetheart, and they had twenty-six happy years together. After her marriage, Sydna was active in Pathfinders Club in Conway County. When Bart retired from farming in Hattieville, the couple moved to Russellville and she became active in various retired teacher's organizations. Sydna also researched and helped to place her childhood church, St. Paul's Methodist Church at Gravel Hill, on the Arkansas List of Historic Places.

Sydna was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Irene Young; five brothers, Robert Glynn Young, Lynn Myers Young, George Ewing Young, R. A. Young and an infant brother; a beloved nephew, Johnny Young; a beloved niece, Vickie Young Stroder; and her first husband and father of her children, Jack Smith.

Surviving family members include her husband Arvil "Bart" Barton of Russellville; her children, Jacquelyn (Jim) Bonds, Debbie (David) Darr and Bob (Tanya) Smith, all of the Russellville area, Linda (Gary) Wilson and Gary (Ann) Barton, all of the San Francisco, California area; seven grandchildren, James Dustin (Angela) Bonds of Russellville, Mikel (Kathryn) Brock of Maryland, Angela (Phil) Kemmer of Russellville and Stacy Wilson, Ryan, Jeff, and Andrew Barton, all of the San Francisco area; nine great-grandchildren, Grayson Bonds, Brandon Brock, Anthony Miedzinski, Nik Miedzinski, Shane Brock, Alyssa Kemmer and Thomas, Liam and Sophia Barton; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Humphrey Chapel with Pastor Jon Scheible officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Gill Cemetery near Van Buren under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016.
