Edyth Marion Allen Obituary (1919

Edyth Marion Satterfield Allen, 92, of Lafayette, LA, formerly of Russellville, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Lafayette General Hospital in Lafayette, LA. The daughter of Douglas and Ollie Lee Murphy Satterfield, she was born on February 1, 1919, in Kimberly, AL. She was a 1937 graduate of Eudora High School in Eudora, Arkansas. She and Benjamin Allen, Jr. were married on May 25, 1942, in New Orleans, LA. To this union were born a son, Robert David Allen and a daughter, Susan Carol Allen (Stanley). During World War II she worked as a stenographer at Higgins Shipyard in New Orleans, LA. She also worked as a hotel switchboard operator at the Arlington in Hot Springs. Ben's work for Bechtel Corporation in the Nuclear Power Construction Division as a welding inspector necessitated moving often and Edyth enjoyed sharing with her friends that she had lived in 17 different states. Her husband worked on Arkansas Nuclear Unit One and Two in Russellville and the family worshipped at Second Baptist Church. Edyth and Ben moved to North Carolina in 1974 and then later upon retirement returned to Russellville and continued their work at Second Baptist. Her hobbies included softball, fishing and league bowling. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin Allen, Jr.; a brother, D. J. Satterfield, Jr.; a sister, Lillian Evelyn Rosenblum; and a half sister, Beatrice Stewart. She is survived by a son, Robert Allen & wife Marilyn, Lafayette, LA; daughter; Susan Allen Stanley & husband Michael, Gibsonia, PA; four grandchildren, Amy Walters & husband Russell, Youngsville, LA, Emily Allen, Irving, TX, Lauren and Jessica Stanley, Gibsonia, PA; two great grandchildren, Claire Walters and Reid Allen Walters, Youngsville, LA; sister, Bertha Irene Satterfield Faulkner of Omaha, NE; and brother, Clifton Earl Satterfield of the Woodlands, TX. Funeral will be at 9:00am, Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Second Baptist Church by Humphrey Funeral Service of Russellville. Rev. Jeff Cheatham will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Deacon Board at Second Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, on Friday, at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 4:00pm on Saturday at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Eudora, Arkansas.
