Bettye Barton, 86, of Dover, passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 from the Stella Manor Nursing Home in Russellville. The daughter of Robert and Ruby (Trantham) Wilson, she was born December 3, 1934 in the Silex Community. She developed a love for music and began playing the piano at her home church at the age of 5.
She was a 1951 graduate of Dover High School, after which she married the love of her life, A.G. Barton, on August 24, 1951. Thus, began their 69-year partnership of living and loving, of growing a family and a business whose roots in the community of Dover and the Arkansas River Valley are ongoing.
Sons, Dale and Boyd, were born in the 1950’s, which resulted in Bettye playing a major role in the entertainment and upbringing of an entire tribe of young people from Dover and its surroundings. One of Boyd’s childhood friends commented, “I am confident that I have eaten more pecan and chocolate pies at Mom Barton’s table than either of her boys.” The Barton home was the place to gather for fun, food, music, fellowship, and the occasional broken limb.
Betty, along with A.G., founded the Dover Supermarket in 1978. Together they invested extensively in their hometown, leading by example in the quality of their business ventures, which included the New Dover Shopping Center located on Highway 7 North. Bettye took a special interest in seeing the completion of Millard-Henry’s Medical Clinic at Dover. Bettye encouraged her community and her son, Dr. Dale Barton, to ensure that the medical needs of the families in the Northern parts of Pope County were met with the same high-quality standards available in larger communities.
She volunteered for many years and in every program of the Dover Public Schools, supported the Dover Chamber of Commerce, Dover’s Economic Development Grants programs, and the Annual Ozark Memories Days.
She treasured spending time with her grandchildren, and found great joy in seeing her life long love of music being passed on to both her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 69 years, A.G. Barton, two sons, Dr. Dale Barton and wife Pam and Boyd Barton and wife Fe, all of Dover; six grandchildren, Shelle and Jason Stormoe, Daniel and Jennifer Barton, Jeanifer Metz and Grant, Chrystal Davis and Hugh, Chasity Williams, and David Barton; grandchild of the heart, April Petite; and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.
A private Graveside Service will be held at Rest Haven Memorial Park by Humphrey Funeral Service. Jim bob Humphrey will officiate. Memorials may be made to the A.G. and Bettye Barton Scholarship Fund for Dover Public Schools, c/o Pam Barton, 545 Bayou Ridge Road, Dover, AR 72837. Honorary pallbearers are her nephews.
