Richard Herman “Dick” Schwartz of Fort Smith, formerly of Russellville, Arkansas died September 15, 2021.
He was born September 6, 1931 in Fort Smith to Joseph and Angela (Kramer) Schwartz.
He graduated from St. Boniface School in 1945 and Saint Anne’s Academy in 1949, where he played football and served as class president. He was the oldest in attendance at St. Anne’s Alumni Reunion, June 2021.
Dick delivered newspapers, worked at Meyers Service Station, Godt Brothers Drug Store, and Dixie Cup Corp. in Fort Smith before joining the Marines (January 17, 1951 - January 16, 1954) and serving in the Korean War, as Antitank-Assault Infantry Unit leader from October 22, 1952 to November 22, 1953. After being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant, he graduated from Arkansas Tech University, where he met Betty Johnston. They were married on June 15, 1957 and spent 60 years together before her death on May 18, 2017.
He retired from ConAgra in Russellville, where he worked for 31 years.
He was a founding father of Knights of Columbus Council 6398 and a member for over 51 years. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Russellville.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, and twin daughters, Stacey and Tracey, his parents and one brother Robert “Bob” Schwartz, father-in-law, Roy Johnston, mother-in-law, Minnie Johnston, brothers-in-law, Raymond, Herman, and Bill Johnston, sister-in-law, Jerry Schwartz, and brother-in-law, Frank Hug, Sr.
He is survived by three brothers: Fred (Dorothy) Schwartz of Kansas City, Missouri, Joe (Alice) Schwartz and Jack (Rosetta) Schwartz of Fort Smith, two sisters, Kitty Hug and Mary Beth Meek, of Fort Smith, sisters-in-law, Bonnie Johnston and Kitty Johnston of Russellville, and many nieces and nephews.
Open viewing will be Thursday, September 23, 2021, at Humphrey Funeral Service from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday, September 24, 2021, from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.
Visitation will be Friday, September 24, 2021, from 12 noon – 1 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church, followed by Rosary at 1 p.m. and the Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m., with Father Jack Sidler officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville by Humphrey Funeral Service.
Pallbearers are Dick’s nephews, Donald Schwartz, Steve Johnston, Scott Schwartz, Frank Hug, Jr., Larry Schwartz, and David Meek.
Honorary Pallbearers are Bob Jacimore, Dale Summitt, Retired Army Major General Gary Johnston, Doug and Anna Schwartz, Bob Ford, Mary Erman Walbe, and Knights of Columbus Council 6398.
