Jean Oates, 91, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Sunday, March 8, 2020, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. The daughter of G. F. Martin and Cora Jane Martin, she was born July 2, 1928, in Wilton.
Jean married Charles Wade Oates on May 4, 1952, in Ashdown, and they spent 63 wonderful years together before his death in 2015. Their lives were enriched with the love and interest Charles had with farming cattle, training horses & collie dogs and the great outdoors. Jean was a homemaker, what time she wasn’t working with Charles at their pharmacy, C & D Drugs, in downtown Russellville, which Charles & Jean began in 1958, in partnership with Dale Walker. Their customers were always pleased with the care and quality with which Jean and Charles served their pharmaceutical needs over the years, and the joy everyone observed in their working together.
She was a loving & wonderful mother to her three children, and the many friends they welcomed into their home. She always treated all her guests like family. Jean and her family were faithful members and valued servants of Central Presbyterian Church. Her ministry included driving friends and church members to doctor appointments and other activities when they were unable to drive themselves. She was also a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), Culture Club, the Hungry Widows Social Club, and Silver Sneakers.
She will be remembered as an amazing woman, loyal friend, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and neighbor. It has been said of her that her legacy is her faith and her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wade Oates; her parents; three siblings, Margaret Peyton, Billie Webster, and Mary Martin.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include her three children, Brenda Oates Harrison (Jan Sr.) of Russellville; Charles David Oates (Tonya) of Pottsville, and Bonita Oates Moore (Brian) of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Avonlea Harrison Hardin (Scott) of Little Rock, Jan Michael Harrison Jr. of Russellville, Whitney Walters Hollowell (Cole) of Fayetteville, and Daniel Walters (Jessie) of Pottsville; Three great-grandchildren, Harrison Hardin, Adeline Walters, and Charlee Grace Hollowell, two nieces, Renee Peyton of East Point, GA and Kathy Mills Horn (Christopher) of Alma; two nephews, Alan Peyton of China and Michael Mills (Renee) of Russellville; her dog, Napoleon of Pottsville; and numerous extended family members and friends.
