Obituary

On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, Joseph George Wichmann, committed husband and father, died at the age of 71 at the Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home.

The son of Bernard and Laverne (Scott) Wichmann, Joe was born October 17, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri.  He married Jeannie (Harrison) on September 25, 1971, at the First Christian Church in Russellville, and together they raised a son, Zachary, and two daughters, Amanda and Rebecca.

A National Merit Scholar, Joe graduated Westminster College in 1971 and immediately began working as an inspector for the United States Postal Service.  After completing certification at Georgetown University, he began working as a forensic scientist/document examiner and joined the Illinois State Police in 1978.  After twenty-eight years of distinguished service, marked by awards and commendations, he retired in 2006 as the Director of the State Police Crime Lab in Joliet, Illinois.  A life-long learner, in retirement he attended Arkansas Tech University and earned a Master of Arts in 2009.

Joe loved learning and was committed to his Catholic faith.  He was known throughout his life for a keen intellect, acquisitive nature and quick wit.  He cherished evenings reading an interesting book, watching a good movie or listening to great music.  Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Jeannie, son, Zachary, daughters Amanda (husband Robert Cali), Rebecca (Worley), grandchildren Claudia, Madalyn, Mary, Margaret and Keller, brother Ted, sisters Laurie (Dore) and Jeannie (Velders) and many nieces and nephews.

A private memorial graveside service will be held Friday, October 9, 2020, at Ball Hill Cemetery in Russellville. Father Ernie Hardesty will officiate.
