Mildred “Tommie” Findley, 93, of Russellville, went home to be with Her Lord Monday, March 2, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. The daughter of William Rance Shinn and Edna Lois (McAnulty) Shinn, she was born August 1, 1926 in Russellville. Mildred was a coal miner’s daughter who grew up on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work and putting family first. She started school at age four in the one-room school in the Old Bethel Community and later graduated from Pottsville High School in 1943 and also attended Capital City Business College for bookkeeping.
Mildred worked for International Shoe Company as a foreman in the fitting department for 31 years, Rest Haven Memorial Park as an administrator for 9 years, and Humphrey Funeral Service as a night receptionist for 23 years.
During her life she served her Lord faithfully. She was a member of Sunny Point Assembly of God for 55 years, where she was a former secretary and Sunday school teacher. During late night hours Mildred could be found in her chair reading her Bible.
Family was paramount to Mildred. When times were tough Mildred was always there with an open door, good advice, and a hug that somehow could brighten even the darkest day. If you were lucky she would even have something cooking and if you were very lucky it would be chicken and dumplings. She also enjoyed crochet, cooking, ceramics, and sewing. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Blanche Welcher; two brothers, Leonard Shinn and Ira Shinn; and a foster son, Jimmy Travis
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Finley husband Wayne; granddaughter, Deborah Jennings husband John; grandson, David Finley; two great-granddaughters, Caiti Jennings and Emily Jennings, all of Russellville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM, Friday, March 6, 2020 at Humphrey Chapel. Rev. Jimmy Williams will officiate. Burial will be at Shinn Cemetery in Russellville by Humphrey Funeral Service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1-2PM, on Friday, at the funeral home.
