Taylor Eugene “Gene” Edwards, 88, of Russellville, died Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center. The son of Benny and Leah W. (Smith) Edwards, he was born October 28, 1932, in Stuttgart. He married Connie (Pierce) Edwards on August 20, 1954, with whom he shared 66 wonderful years before she preceded in death on February 24, 2020.
Gene was a graduate of Henderson State University in 1956 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He served four years in the United States Navy during a time between the Korean and Vietnam wars. Rising to the rank of Radioman Third Class, he served on a Naval destroyer overseas and never forgot how to send Morse Code. Following his military service, he worked as a Switchman with Southern Pacific Railroad.
Fishing was Gene’s raging passion. He would rather have been in his boat bass fishing than anything else in life. He was a charter member of National Bass and also a charter member of the Pine Bluff Bass Club. While living in Pine Bluff, he and Connie attended the First Christian Church.
Gene was a people person. He loved to make people laugh with his dry sense of humor. Those who knew him best described him as laid back, easy going and a true southern gentleman. He loved “happily ever after” endings and was a great fan of the Hallmark Channel. Somewhat of a “master of all trades,” there was hardly anything Gene could not fix.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his late wife, Connie. He is survived by their daughter, Vonda Edwards, and two nephews, Charles Pierce and LaMonte Pierce.
Because of his great love for fishing, memorial donations are encouraged to the: CAST for Kids Foundation, www.castforkids.org; a volunteer foundation that takes special needs children fishing.
Private burial arrangements are provided by Humphrey Funeral Service at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville. No services are planned. Internet obituary and on-line guest book are available at www.humphreyfuneral.com.
